What drew you to The Refinery as your dream venue?

“The obvious answer is the spectacular food! Rogue Bistro is one of our all-time favourites, so we knew that the menu would be memorable (spoiler alert: it was). Beyond that though, we were after an inner-city modern chic venue, and The Refinery nailed the brief. It is immediately clear that it is run by a very passionate team - every little detail and every decision about the venue has been made with loving intention. It was also important to us to be able to have the ceremony and reception at the one venue, and both the indoor and outdoor areas here are beautiful. Small enough to still be intimate but large enough to not feel cramped.”

Fave moment of the day?

“It’s a collection of small moments spent alone in the Bridal Suite actually. It’s so easy to get caught in the moment a bit too much and let the day pass you by. It was amazing to be able to hit pause away from the party, and sit with each other to really appreciate what was happening. We loved those short moments when it was just us two again, having the best day. Then to open up the door back to the party and to hear sounds of our nearest and dearest, all in one place, having the best time..”

What's the significance / sentiment of having a lion dance at such a special occasion?

“We both grew up seeing lion dances at big celebrations like Chinese New Year. It’s not super traditional to have lion dances at weddings actually, but we fell in love with what they symbolise. The lions bring good fortune and prosperity, while warding off evil spirits. What better way to kick off married life, right?

Besides, they’re just SUPER FUN! Our memories with lion dances have all been such joyous occasions.”

Tell us more about your wedding favours and the backstory here!

“The first time we met, at a mutual friend’s party, Sau brought a jar of a delectable treat called Christmas Crack - essentially melted chocolate on top of caramel, on top of a bed of Saladas (it’s incredible). As the night wound down, I asked her for the recipe (legitimately needed it in my life) - which is when she eagerly handed over her number.

We thought it would be cute (and delicious) to make Christmas Crack as favours for all our guests. The weeks of baking were definitely worth it!”

What would you say to future couples about what to expect on the big day? Any hot tips?

“Things never go 100% to plan, and it goes by very, very fast. Our biggest tip is to invest time being deliberate in picking vendors you are happy with. We had the most amazing team for our day, which meant that we could relax, trusting that everything would be sorted for us.

Question everything - every tradition, every custom, everything you see online. This is your day, so don’t do anything just because that’s how it’s always been done or because it’s trending on Instagram. Spend time to work out your priorities for your big day. Food is very important to us, so that played a big part of our decision making process.

Finally, make sure you actually take time enjoy the day, with your new husband/wife!”
